Fever in children is one of the most common reasons parents seek medical attention. While mild viral infections cause most fevers and go away on their own, some can be a sign of something more serious. Knowing when to monitor a fever at home and when to visit urgent care can help ensure your child gets the right care at the right time.
What Is a Fever?
A fever is defined as a body temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. It’s the body’s natural response to fighting infections. Fevers can help the immune system by making it harder for viruses and bacteria to thrive.
Common Causes of Fever in Children
- Viral infections (like the flu or common cold)
- Bacterial infections (such as strep throat or ear infections)
- Inflammatory conditions
- Reactions to immunizations
When to Monitor at Home
Many fevers do not require immediate medical attention and can be managed with rest, hydration, and fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Consider monitoring at home if your child:
- Is older than 6 months
- Has a temperature under 102°F
- Is alert and responsive
- Is drinking fluids and eating small meals
- Is playing or interacting between episodes of rest
When to Seek Urgent Care
You should visit urgent care if your child:
- Is under 3 months old with any fever (100.4°F or higher)
- Is between 3 and 6 months with a fever of 102°F or higher
- Has a fever lasting more than 3 days
- Is lethargic, excessively sleepy, or unresponsive
- Is vomiting, refusing fluids, or showing signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears when crying, fewer wet diapers)
- Has a seizure associated with the fever (febrile seizure)
- Has a rash, trouble breathing, or persistent pain
