How to Know if Your Child’s Fever Needs Urgent Care

Here's how to tell when your child’s fever is cause for concern and when it’s time to head to urgent care.

Fever in children is one of the most common reasons parents seek medical attention. While mild viral infections cause most fevers and go away on their own, some can be a sign of something more serious. Knowing when to monitor a fever at home and when to visit urgent care can help ensure your child gets the right care at the right time.

What Is a Fever?

A fever is defined as a body temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher. It’s the body’s natural response to fighting infections. Fevers can help the immune system by making it harder for viruses and bacteria to thrive.

Common Causes of Fever in Children

  • Viral infections (like the flu or common cold)
  • Bacterial infections (such as strep throat or ear infections)
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Reactions to immunizations

When to Monitor at Home

Many fevers do not require immediate medical attention and can be managed with rest, hydration, and fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Consider monitoring at home if your child:

  • Is older than 6 months
  • Has a temperature under 102°F
  • Is alert and responsive
  • Is drinking fluids and eating small meals
  • Is playing or interacting between episodes of rest

When to Seek Urgent Care

You should visit urgent care if your child:

  • Is under 3 months old with any fever (100.4°F or higher)
  • Is between 3 and 6 months with a fever of 102°F or higher
  • Has a fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Is lethargic, excessively sleepy, or unresponsive
  • Is vomiting, refusing fluids, or showing signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears when crying, fewer wet diapers)
  • Has a seizure associated with the fever (febrile seizure)
  • Has a rash, trouble breathing, or persistent pain
