What Parents Should Know About RSV in Children

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a highly contagious respiratory virus that is most common during the fall and winter months. It can affect people of all ages but is particularly concerning in infants, toddlers, and young children.

What Is RSV?

RSV causes infections of the lungs and respiratory tract. RSV in children mostly resembles a common cold. However, for some — especially those under 2 years old or with underlying health conditions — it can lead to more serious respiratory issues like bronchiolitis or pneumonia.

How It Spreads

RSV spreads easily through:

  • Coughs and sneezes
  • Direct contact with nasal or oral secretions
  • Touching contaminated surfaces (toys, doorknobs, etc.) and then touching the face

Common Symptoms of RSV

  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Decreased appetite
  • Irritability or trouble sleeping
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing

Symptoms typically appear 4 to 6 days after exposure and can last for 1 to 2 weeks.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Visit urgent care immediately if your child:

  • Is under 6 months old and is having breathing difficulties
  • Has rapid, shallow, or labored breathing
  • Is refusing to eat or drink
  • Appears lethargic or has a bluish tint to lips, face, or fingernails
  • Has wheezing or a high-pitched noise when breathing
